For this project, we designed a sculptural bench to be placed in the main lobby of the Instructional Center on Georgia Tech’s Campus. Given its namesake, our proposal for the project is a modular bench, with five sections intended to be arranged in a semi-circle. The bench is made up of two materials: oak wood and steel.
Our proposal commands the space within the building, allowing easy accessibility to the bench and the surrounding classrooms and hallways. The wooden top of the bench is sculpted in an alternating wave pattern on both sides of the bench, allowing for seating on both sides of the bench comfortably. Surrounding the bench’s exterior is more sculptural wood, helping to identify each seat and making the base visually interesting. Underneath the wooden shell is a support system made from steel, and attached with screws and bolts.
